InfraBuild has a rich history spanning more than 100 years and has entered an exciting new chapter, playing an integral role in the nation building of Australia.<\/p>\n\t

At InfraBuild, we are inspired by visions of what might be possible, of making our world a stronger, safer, more sustainable and connected place to live. They inspire us to challenge the notion of what is possible, from building the cities that we live in to the infrastructure that powers them. BHP’s first Australian Steelworks Opens<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

BHP’s Newcastle Steelworks is completed and opens in Newcastle. The first large scale steelworks in the nation, it will run for the next 84 years and help industrialise the nation.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Newcastle’s First Coil<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

The first coil of wire was drawn at Newcastle. This marked the birth of the plant now known as the Newcastle Wire Mill.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

The Australian Reinforcing Company (ARC) is formed<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

ARC was formed from the British Reinforced Concrete Engineering Co. Ltd. (B.R.C.) and in 1920, purchased land along Ballarat Road in Sunshine where it became the first Australian manufacturer to produce fabricated steel mesh.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

ARC supports WW2 effort<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

As for all Australians and Australian businesses, the war years were a difficult time for ARC. With Australian, British and US forces using steel mesh and reinforcing for a number of applications, 98 per cent of the Company’s output was dedicated to the war effort.ARC was part of an essential industry, so its workers weren’t required to enlist. That didn’t stop nearly one-third of the workforce from serving in the military with distinction.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

BHP Steel Rises<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

There is only one Australian structural steel long products producer, BHP Steel (which also make flat products). BHP Steel owns 99% market share.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Increased Capability<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Smorgon Steel opens the Laverton Steel Mill.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

ARC becomes part of Smorgon Consolidated Industries <\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

In 1982 ARC was acquired by concrete pipe manufacturer Humes Ltd. In 1988 Humes was then taken over by Smorgon Consolidated Industries (SCI), which had a growing presence in the industry.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Mergers Begin<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

BHP acquires BORAL STEEL which is renamed REOSTEEL<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Sydney Expansion<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

BHP Steel opens a new EAF and Bar Mill at Rooty Hill in Sydney.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Uniting Australia’s Reinforcing Businesses<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

BHP combines Aquila Steel, Reosteel, Queensland Welded Mesh, and Fibresteel into BHP Reinforcing Products.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Expanding our Tubular Capacity<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

BHP acquires Tubemakers.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

OneSteel is Born<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

BHP spins out Steel Long Products to become OneSteel, then later BHP spins out their Flats Products Division to form BlueScope Steel.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Smorgon Expands<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Smorgon Metal Recycling and Metalcorp Limited merge to form Smorgon Steel Recycling.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Hexham Shredder Commissioned<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Our Recycling business increased their capacity in the Newcastle region with the commissioning of a heavy duty scrap metal shredder.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Two Giants Redefine Australian Steel<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Smorgon Steel Group and OneSteel merge. Smorgon Steel Reinforcing rebrands to The Australian Reinforcing Company in the following year.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

OneSteel Evolves<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

The OneSteel Corporate business name changes to Arrium.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

AusTube Mills Celebrates 80 years of Quality Steel Manufacturing<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t
